Investing in Carbon Capture Means Investing in an Integrated System

As carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) moves from concept to deployment, attention is increasingly turning to how projects around the globe can attract investment and manage risk across the full value chain.
In this article, WSP experts Dominic Cook and Rish Chandarana explore why investors need to look beyond individual capture, transport and storage assets and consider how the entire system works together. Some of the most significant investment risks can emerge at the interfaces between assets, where technical, commercial and regulatory considerations can influence project economics, performance and investor confidence.
These are issues WSP encounters directly through its Investment and Transaction Advisory work, providing technical due diligence to investors and lenders considering CCUS investments, as well as leading a consortium of partners providing technical advice to the UK Government on delivery of its CCUS programme.
The insights build on discussions at the recent IPFA event hosted with WSP on CCUS in the United Kingdom on 8 September, exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with developing an investable CCUS market.
