Fredrik Morfeldt from Cirio, joins our Branch Council in the Nordics

We are pleased to welcome on board Fredrik Morfeldt, Partner at Cirio Law Firm, as a Nordics Branch Council Member.

Fredrik Morfeldt – Partner, Cirio Law Firm
Fredrik Morfeldt is a Partner at Cirio, specializing in private M&A with a strong focus on the infrastructure, industrial, and energy sectors. He brings extensive experience advising on renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind, hydro, solar, battery storage, and hydrogen facilities, as well as critical infrastructure such as data centers, power grids, and district heating. Fredrik regularly supports clients in the development and financing of complex industrial and energy projects across the Nordic region. His recent work includes advising on landmark transactions in wind, solar, and hydropower, as well as strategic investments in district heating networks. Fredrik is also a member of Cirio’s Asian Practice Group and a member of the Swedish Bar Association.
We asked Frederik a few questions about his new role on the council:
If you could personally change or influence one thing within infrastructure and/or energy, what would it be?
As a lawyer there are many things that are frustrating, such as regulatory hurdles, long turnaround times (especially for permitting), and a focus on compliance for its own sake rather than the underlying issues. But of I were to chose one thing, it would be to improve transaction processes. Infrastructure projects are complex and do often require long-term collaboration between stakeholders. But transaction processes do still tend to be very transactional with parties negotiating based on position instead of goals, adopting the often-false premises that a negotiation is a zero-sum-game (that is sometimes true but not as often as one might think in my experience). This is not ideal and does tend to create an atmosphere of festering suspicion of distrust, that may live with parties for decades.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to yourself at the start of your career?
Keep an open mind, try different things, and enjoy the journey. Goals are good, but so is flexibility whenever a curveball comes your way. Even if you find out that something is not your thing, you will come out of it with new knowledge and insights that will be useful for other things.
What do you hope to bring to the Nordic Council?
My former colleague Peter Högström sat on the Nordic Council for several years. Peter passed away unexpectedly and much too soon earlier this year. He was an incredible individual who was creative, highly motivated, and not afraid to work relentlessly to realise his ideas. I hope to be able to carry on Peter’s legacy and not least contribute to sparking interesting conversations and facilitating meeting spaces for the industry.
