Powering Data Centres in Asia

In the world of greenfield infrastructure projects and infrastructure financing, arguably sped up as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, recently there has emerged a new “flavour of the month” in the growth of data centre projects. These are springing up almost everywhere it seems, even in some traditionally trickier locations within emerging markets. On paper these are not a complicated asset class. Some describe them as real estate deals some describe them as TMT deals. The reality is probably that they are all of those things but as the markets evolve, and as the move to net zero gains more and more momentum, we are seeing some nuanced issues coming to light for developers, investors, financiers and regulating governments alike, particularly around sustainable energy sources.

Discussion points:

– Regulatory hurdles and differences between different jurisdictions

– The demands of end users for the use of more sustainable energy

– M&A opportunities
