The Cost of Capital Observatory: Building Transparency on the Cost of Capital of Clean Energy Projects in Emerging Markets

Energy-related CO2 emissions from emerging and developing economies (EMDEs) are set to grow by 5 billion tonnes over the next two decades. By 2030, annual clean energy investments in EMDEs need to be multiplied by more than seven – from less than USD 150 billion currently to over $1 trillion – to put the world on track to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The Cost of Capital (CoC) Observatory aims to address the obstacles to investing in renewable energy in EMDEs by filling the absence of reliable data and improving transparency on cost of capital data for clean energy investments in EMDEs, helping to inform stakeholders about inherent risks and develop commensurate risk-mitigating mechanisms. This session will share the early analyses from the data collected in the CoC Observatory on financing clean energy projects in EMDEs and how companies can engage in the CoC Observatory going forward.
